This week on The Evolved Vets Podcast, we interviewed hospital owner, Dr. Mike Walker. Founder of Apollo Vet Clinics (Wimberley & Austin), Mike is the definition of “bet on yourself.” He graduated with $160K in debt, $2K in his bank account, and a belief that he could build something different, and he did. He is a true inspiration.
What began as one small clinic in a strip center is now a growing company built on empowerment, transparency, and what he calls a high-performing sports-team culture.

Take the Next Best Step
Culture is a Daily Practice, Not a Poster
You know the posters plastered along the walls in grade school that said, “There’s no I in team” and had a group of kids smiling and holding a ball? Well, Mike believes culture is much more than an inspirational quote on the wall, and instead it's an active mission within his clinics. His team literally wrote their Code of Conduct together and every employee has the opportunity to add to it after after 90 days with the team. They hold each other accountable to this Code, even if that means calling out the boss for not saying “good morning.” Dr. Walker says, “Culture can fall apart in days if you stop tending to it.”
Research backs him up: teams that practice peer-to-peer accountability report 31% higher trust and 27% higher performance (Harvard Business Review, 2021).
Mentorship > Money
Instead of chasing giant sign-on bonuses, Mike builds mentorship infrastructures. Every new grad at Apollo has a dedicated mentor who tracks their growth week by week.
He says, “Upskill medicine and surgery first. The money always follows.”
And he’s right, studies show mentorship increases long-term retention by over 50% (Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, 2020).
Work-life balance is a two-way street
Mike’s take was bold: “It’s not fair to put work-life balance all on your workplace. You have to own it too.”
At TEV, we couldn’t agree more. Balance isn’t built through workplace standards alone, but through self reflection and boundaries created by living aligned with your Authentic Values.
Goldfish Memory = Leadership Resilience
When his newest clinic got its first 2-star review, Mike didn’t spiral, and instead he smiled. “Three years ago I’d have been tearing my hair out. Now I just see it as a learning moment.” When you have the memory of a goldfish, you can learn and forget instead of spinning out of the mistakes we make. Perfectionism lives large in our industry so thinking about having short term memory and learning how to do it differently next time and letting it go is key.
That’s resilience! The bounce-back time from stress to baseline. Neuroscientists call it emotional recovery time, and research shows shortening it is one of the most powerful predictors of long-term wellbeing (Davidson & McEwen, Nature Neuroscience Reviews, 2012).
Kindness is the New Competitive Edge
His mentor once told him: “If you open a clinic and you’re just kind to people, you’ll be successful.”
Turns out, compassion is the ultimate differentiator. Clients may forget prices, but they never forget how they felt in your hands.
The Big Takeaway
You don’t need to have it all figured out to build something extraordinary. You just need to start. Be kind. Be real. Be willing to learn out loud. And just take the next best step.
