The truth about burnout, from vets like YOU!
Nov 21, 2025
This week was a special one! I held The Evolved Vets very first Energy Over Effort: The New Model for Veterinary Leadership Summit. It was moving, connective and vulnerable.
If you were part of the Summit, you already know something special happened in that virtual room.
If not, you can read the highlights and register to watch the replay videos.
The best part of the Summit: Veterinarians showed up not just to learn, but to connect, heart-to-heart, story-to-story. We didn’t just talk about burnout. We named it, normalized it, and learned how to heal it.
It made me even more excited about Code Blue Coaching, and bringing new principles and stories to each of you. There’s something electric about being in a room full of vet professionals who deeply want to serve the pets of this world, but need a little help making your career sustainable.

The Energy Over Effort Summit Highlights
All Veterinarians Are Leaders
One of the most beautiful truths that emerged from the Summit was this: all veterinarians are leaders simply because of your impact. Every day, you lead clients through fear. You lead pets through pain. You lead teams through unpredictable, high-stakes moments. Leadership in veterinary medicine isn’t about a position on an org chart, it’s about emotional regulation, presence, and the energy you bring into the room. Research from Dr. Daniel Siegel shows that a regulated nervous system creates co-regulation, meaning your calm becomes contagious, your steadiness becomes safety, and your alignment becomes a model others unconsciously follow.
When you manage your energy, you elevate your influence. When you show up grounded, others feel grounded. This is why learning to lead from flow instead of force isn’t optional, it transforms entire hospitals. And the Summit reminded you: you already are a leader… now it’s time to feel like one.
The Connection We All Craved
What struck me most was how quickly walls came down.
Chat boxes and DMs lit up with things like:
“I thought I was the only one feeling this way.”
“I don't want to leave veterinary medicine, but is that my only way to sustainability?”
It was proof that community is the medicine, and that collective healing begins when one brave person speaks truth. When you open up instead of hiding behind our shields, that is where the magic happens.
You weren’t just veterinarians and leaders that day; you were humans remembering that it’s okay to pause, rest, and recharge.
What We Learned About Burnout
The science confirmed what many of you have felt for years:
Burnout isn’t a personal flaw, it’s a physiological response to unmanaged stress in a broken system and a world built on hustle culture.
- The World Health Organization (2019) defines burnout as an occupational phenomenon, not a personal weakness.
- 89% of leaders report mental exhaustion tied to performance pressure (Harvard Business Review, 2019).
- And chronic stress literally reshapes the brain, shrinking the prefrontal cortex (focus, empathy) while over-activating the amygdala (fear, urgency) (McEwen, 2017).
But here’s the hope: you can rewire. Through The Evolved Method™ with Meditation, Elevation, Integration, you can restore balance to the nervous system, rebuild confidence, and lead from flow instead of force.
The Big Takeaway
Your nervous system is your leadership system.
When you regulate your energy, you elevate your influence.
Because here’s the truth:
"Regulated leaders create regulated teams." -Dr. Daniel Siegel
And overwhelm & burnout doesn’t just affect you, it affects every patient, client, and teammate in your orbit.
That’s why energy management isn’t self-care fluff, it's a leadership strategy, based on science.

Because Here’s the Truth
You can’t lead others from depletion.
You lead best when you’re regulated, rested, and real.
You have to put your own oxygen mask first.
You have to invest in yourself with time, money and worthiness to create change. You deserve it!
The veterinary profession doesn’t need more hustle. It needs more harmony. And if this week's Energy Over Effort Summit proved anything, it’s that when veterinarians come together with courage, kindness, and compassion, you rise.
