The secret message about how hustling leads to burnout!
Dec 12, 2025
This week in New York, I saw Hamilton on Broadway for the very first time.
And wow… I was not prepared. It was incredible.
Somewhere between “My Shot,” “Non-Stop,” and the haunting stillness of “It’s Quiet Uptown,” I found myself getting emotional for a completely different reason:
Hamilton isn’t just a musical.
It’s a mirror.
A warning.
A wake-up call for every high-achieving, adrenaline-fueled, hustling human, especially if you’re in vet med.
Because Alexander Hamilton’s story is about his hustling nature.
It’s what happens when brilliance meets relentless pressure, ambition meets scarcity, and identity gets wrapped around achievement.
It’s what happens when “I’ll never be satisfied…” becomes a lifestyle instead of a moment.

The Results of Hustling
You Are Hamilton.
Or at least… the un-evolved version of you is.
The version many of you were taught to:
- Never slow down.
- Achieve more.
- Produce more.
- Sacrifice your time with loved ones.
- Work harder.
- Don’t waste your shot.
- Sleep when you're dead.
- Live for legacy.
- Be indispensable.
Sound familiar? Well, It’s the same energy that runs through hospitals everywhere:
“I’ll rest when things slow down.”
“I’ll take care of myself after the next crisis.”
“I’ll feel proud when I finally get _(insert goal here)_.”
“I’ll be happy when everything is perfect.”
But Hamilton shows you something you rarely pause long enough to see:
Hustle unchecked becomes self-destruction.
Hamilton’s fear of not being enough kept him from seeing that he already was enough. His ambition cost him presence. His peace. His love. Ultimately, it cost him his life. And friend… isn’t that the trap so many of you fall into?
Burnout = The Modern Hamilton
Research shows that high achievers with perfectionistic traits are at significantly higher risk of burnout, especially in medicine. You chase impossible standards, tie our worth to your output, and ignore the emotional bill accumulating beneath the surface. But no amount of hustle can fill the void that only alignment can heal.
Because the truth is: If you can’t feel “enough” now, you won’t feel “enough” later. Even with the title, the promotions, the accolades, or the applause.
Hamilton had everything he thought he wanted.
And still felt behind.
Still felt unworthy.
Still felt like he had something to prove.
It wasn’t the world demanding more from him.
It was him demanding more from himself.
And that hit me hard. It reminded me of times I did the same. The good news, you can overcome this.
The Most Heartbreaking Part
For me, it wasn’t the duels or the death or the grief that gutted me. It was watching Hamilton finally realize, too late, that the thing he was searching for was there all along:
Love. Connection. Purpose. Presence. Enoughness.
That’s the tragedy. Not the bullet, but the blindness.
And it’s the tragedy you can prevent in your own lives.
The Lesson Vet Med Needs
You don’t have to grind yourself into the ground to matter. You already do!
You don’t have to earn your worthiness. You are worthy!
You don’t have to sacrifice joy for legacy. You gain legacy by prioritizing joy.
Your life is not a race. Your career is not a duel. And you’re allowed to celebrate and enjoy the moments in between the milestones.
The Hamilton Reframe
Ask yourself:
- Where am I rushing?
- What am I trying to prove?
- What am I afraid will happen if I slow down?
- What would “enough” feel like today, not someday?
Because the only story that matters is the one where you get to choose presence over pressure. Purpose over perfection. Alignment over achievement addiction. Flow over force.
Final Thoughts
If Hamilton teaches you anything, it’s this: Don’t wait until the end of your story to realize you were already living the part that mattered most.
You are already enough.
You are already worthy.
And the life you want isn’t coming “someday.”
It’s available the moment you slow down long enough to feel and appreciate it.
